In case you think this is a modern concept, think again.
I received an interesting link through Composers’ Datebook.
To cut a long story short, it was on today’s date in 1739 that Herr Georg Friedrich Händel (by now anglicised to Mr. George Frederic Handel) advertised in the papers that he was accepting subscriptions for his latest work. Among those who responded to the advertisement was a certain Mr. Charles Jennens.
Mr. Jennens went on the provide the text for Handel’s next big work, the oratorio “Messiah” (and I needn’t tell you what a humdinger of a smash hit THAT went on to be!)and it premiered in Dublin due to him as well.
Handel must definitely have thanked his stars for having advertised.
